Green card is an international certificate of liability insurance and the basis on which the damages caused with the vehicle of the guilty party are indemnified to the victim according to the rules applied in the country where the accident occurred.
Your green card will be issued to you free of charge at any ERGO branch. It pays to take the green card with you when you travel to an EU or EEA country.
Registration of damages abroad
An accident caused in a foreign country must be registered as accurately and properly as possible. The police must be called if the damages caused are large, there are people who have suffered injuries or if the circumstances of the accident are unclear. If you register the damages without the help of police, use the blue and yellow Accident Notice form that is in Estonian to compare that all fields have been correctly filled in. A similar form is widely used all over Europe.
Unlike in Estonia, the person who caused the traffic damage in other countries is not determined by the parties. If the accident is not registered by the police, the person who caused the traffic damage must confirm their liability for causing the traffic damage with their signature in field 14 Notes on the Estonian Accident Notice form.
The person who caused the traffic damage must explain the circumstances of the accident in writing and submit their vehicle to the insurance company who issued their green card for review. Traffic damage is indemnified to the victim according to the standards and limits applicable in the country where the accident occurred. According to agreements, damages are indemnified to the victim by the green card bureau in the country where the accident occurred which will then reclaim the indemnity and all handling costs from the insurance company who issued the green card.
